1. What is a meal plan?

A meal plan is a pre-paid account used to eat on campus with a simple swipe of your Cardinal Card. Meal plans are comprised of meals and flex points.

2. What are “meals”?

Meals may be used at the following:
Ville Grill: all-you-care-to-eat
Global Market: combos, breakfast and lunch
Cardinal Burger Company: combos, dinner

One meal is valid for one entrance to Ville Grill or one combo at Global Market and Cardinal Burger Company.  Meals expire at the end of each semester.

3. What are “flex points”?

Flex points are a dollar for dollar declining balance-type account that is accepted at any campus dining location.  Flex points earn an automatic 6 percent discount with each purchase.  Flex points roll over from fall to spring semester.  All flex points expire after spring finals.

4. Am I required to have a meal plan?

All students living in campus housing, regardless of current courseload, and any commuter student who is classified full-time taking at least 9 of those credit hours on the Belknap campus is required to have a meal plan. If required, you will automatically be assigned a meal plan each semester according to where you live. This plan is preloaded on your Cardinal Card ID and becomes active on move-in day.

The following residences are considered campus housing and all residents will be assigned a meal plan:

$1,460 Meal Plan   $930 Meal Plan

Center Hall
Community Park
Kurz Hall
Louisville Hall
Miller Hall
Threlkeld Hall
Unitas Tower
Wellness House
West Hall

Bettie Johnson Hall
University Tower Apartments

$175 Meal Plan

All students classified full-time taking at least 9 of those credit hours on the Belknap campus

Cardinal Towne, The Province and The Bellamy are affiliated housing, but residents are considered commuter students and will have a mandatory meal plan if they meet the minimum credit hour requirements.

5. Can I change my meal plan?

While there are three pricing tiers according to where you live, there are several plan structures within each tier so that you may customize your plan to fit your lifestyle at no extra cost or chose a suitable upgrade.

The Cardinal Card website will make a selection form available before each semester.

You may also elect to use the Meal Plan Transfer Program to sell all or a portion of your flex points (not meals) to another individual. For full details, please see the Meal Plan Transfer Program page.

You may purchase additional flex points or meals in blocks of 10 at anytime. Create an account at Cardinal Card Online to add flex, and use the Meal Swipes Purchasing Form to add meals.

View available meal plan options and upgrades.

6. How may I purchase a meal plan?

If you are a student who is living on campus or a commuter classified full-time and taking at least 9 credit hours on the Belknap campus the University of Louisville will automatically assign you a meal plan each semester according to where you live.  This meal plan is charged to your tuition account, preloaded onto your Cardinal Card and becomes active on move-in day.

Faculty, staff and students who are not automatically assigned to a plan should contact the Cardinal Card Office to purchase a meal plan.  You may create your own plan in any combination of flex points or 10-meal blocks.  The meals are to be used at Ville Grill, the most sustainable dining venue on campus.  In addition, when you deposit $100 or more to your meal plan flex account, you’ll receive a 10% bonus (ex. $150 deposit = $165 Flex Points credit).

7. Does my meal plan expire?

Although flex points roll over from the fall semester to the spring semester, meal swipes expire at the end of finals each semester. All flex points will expire after spring finals. Any flex points deposited during the summer will not expire until the next spring’s finals.

8. How can I keep track of my meal plan?

At any transaction you may ask the cashier for a receipt which will show your remaining meal plan balance. You may also manage your account online through the Cardinal Card web site: www.louisville.edu/cardinalcard. Here you may view your account balance, track your purchases and make additional deposits. Any flex point deposit more than $100 earns a 10 percent bonus. Example: a $150 deposit gives you $165 flex points to spend.

9. How do I add funds to my meal plan?

You may easily add funds using Visa or MasterCard through the "Deposit Funds" link on the Cardinal Card web site. The Cardinal Card office, located on the lower level of the Houchen's building, accepts cash, Visa and MasterCard.

While you may make deposits in any amount, you will receive a 10 percent bonus when you deposit $100 or more (ex. $150 deposit = $165 Flex Points credit).

You may also purchase a block of 10 meals for $75. Meal purchases can be made through the Meal Swipe Purchasing Form or in person at the Cardinal Card Office.

10. Can the meal plan accommodate special dietary needs?

Yes, campus dining venues, especially the main dining hall Ville Grill, provide a wide variety of options which can encompass most special needs. Dining Service staff and chefs will gladly work with any individual student needing further assistance. Please call our executive chef at 502-852-5687.

11. Do campus menus accommodate vegetarians?

If you are vegan or vegetarian, The Wild Mushroom inside Ville Grill is exclusively meat-free and all other campus venues offer vegetarian selections on their menus.

12. Can I use my meal plan for friends and family?

Absolutely, you may spend your flex points however you would like!

Ville Grill also has a guest meal program where you can use one meal plan meal for yourself and one meal to treat a friend or family member.  You must be present and use a meal for yourself at the same time. Only one guest meal can be used at a time. (Max two meal plan meals per transaction.)

13. What if I lose my Cardinal Card?

Report the loss to the Cardinal Card Office IMMEDIATELY, so they can protect your meal plan and any other accounts you access with your card.  You can also do this through Cardinal Card Online.

14. Does Dining Services employ students?
